Watford gets ready to welcome back the Big Skate – plus a German Christmas Market

Winter in Watford is set to go off with a festive bang, as the town prepares to welcome back its outdoor ice rink, with the special extra of a German Christmas Market.

The Big Skate, part of Watford Borough Council’s Big Events series, saw more than 16,000 people take to the ice last year and this time it’s set to be even bigger and better.

The German Market’s traditional wooden chalets will be just a hop, skip and a jump away from the rink, selling seasonal treats, including German sausages, mulled wine and toys. A beautiful carousel will also be there for everyone to enjoy.

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “People loved the rink last year and made it clear they wanted it back. We asked people what we could do better this time – they wanted it to be a bit bigger and to look a lot more Christmassy. So, we’re doing just that! There will be festoon lighting and twinkling Christmas trees, transparent sides, a viewing platform and a small refreshments area. Along with the Christmas market Watford’s town centre is going to be buzzing for this special season.”

The market opens at 12pm on 19 November and people can take to the ice from 28 November. People are advised to book their skating slots early by visiting watfordbigevents.co.uk or calling 01923 634848.
