Big Beach leaves Watford… but Big Screen is on the way!

Watford Big Beach came to a triumphant close yesterday on one of the hottest days of the year.

Thousands of people visited the Big Beach during the nine days when it made its home on The Parade by the pond.

Free activities at the beach included live music, exercise classes, a surfboard simulator and a pirate party for the little ones. But don’t be sad. Another of Watford’s Big Events – a series of major community experiences the council is staging – is on the horizon.

The Big Screen – Watford’s own outdoor cinema – will return for a second year to The Parade by the pond from Thursday 20 August to Sunday 23 August. And this time the screen will be 30% bigger, with even better sound and picture quality, and it will again be completely free to watch throughout that time.

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “One of my priorities is reclaiming our town centre for everyone; and the Big Beach really did bring the community together – young and old. I am hoping to see as many people turn out for the Big Screen – residents have told me how much they loved it last year, so fingers crossed for sunshine, even during Singing in the Rain! Do come along, bring something soft to sit on, and make use of the fantastic restaurants, bars and cafes in the town centre as part of your visit.”

The Big Screen movie marathon will kick off with a screening of 1952 classic Singing in the Rain on Throwback Thursday. Then there’s The Goonies and Ghostbusters on Eighties Friday, three blockbusters including Gravity on Smash Hit Saturday, and The Little Mermaid and Romeo + Juliet on Sing-a-long Sunday.

So bring your own blankets, cushions, chairs and rock up to the Big Screen, where some refreshments will be available. Bring your own or try out the fantastic selection at our local bars and restaurants.
